Overview

What is Cloudflare?

Cloudflare is a global network that sits between the internet and your infrastructure. It makes things faster, safer, and more reliable — whether you're running a Fortune 500 company, shipping a side project, or just trying to look something up.

The network spans 300+ cities worldwide. When someone visits a site protected by Cloudflare, their traffic is routed through the nearest location — threats get blocked, content gets cached, and everything moves faster. Most of the time, neither the visitor nor the site owner has to think about any of it.

For leaders

One platform that replaces a pile of point solutions — CDN, WAF, DDoS protection, Zero Trust access, DNS. Less vendor sprawl, one control plane, one bill.

  • Security at the edge. DDoS attacks, bots, and zero-day exploits get handled before they reach your infrastructure. Cloudflare absorbs over 200 billion threats per day across its network.

  • Performance without the ops. Static assets cached globally, dynamic requests accelerated via Argo Smart Routing. Your users get fast load times regardless of where they are.

  • Zero Trust, actually usable. Cloudflare Access and WARP replace legacy VPNs with identity-aware access that works for remote and hybrid teams without a painful rollout.

  • Scale you don't have to plan for. Traffic spikes, viral moments, DDoS — Cloudflare has absorbed some of the largest attacks ever recorded without the customer noticing.

For developers

Cloudflare's developer platform lets you build and deploy full-stack applications without managing servers — and your code runs in 300+ locations by default, with no cold starts.

  • Workers. Serverless compute that runs at the edge. Write standard JavaScript/TypeScript, deploy globally in seconds. The free tier covers 100k requests/day.

  • Full-stack primitives. KV for key-value storage, D1 for SQLite at the edge, R2 for S3-compatible object storage (no egress fees), Durable Objects for stateful coordination, Queues for async jobs.

  • Pages + Functions. Deploy a frontend and its backend API routes together. Git-push deploys, preview URLs on every PR, zero config for most frameworks.

  • Local dev that actually works. Wrangler CLI and Miniflare run your Workers locally with real binding emulation — KV, D1, R2, DO all work before you deploy.

For everyone

Most people interact with Cloudflare dozens of times a day without knowing it. It's quietly running underneath a huge chunk of the web — not just as a product, but as part of the infrastructure of the internet itself.

  • 1.1.1.1. Cloudflare's public DNS resolver is the fastest in the world and doesn't sell your data. Anyone can use it, for free, right now.

  • Scale. Roughly 20% of all web traffic passes through Cloudflare's network. That's not a marketing claim — it's what makes their threat intelligence so comprehensive.

  • Project Galileo & the Athenian Project. Free protection for civil society — news outlets, human rights orgs, election infrastructure. The "better internet" mission is backed by actual programs.

  • The mission. Cloudflare's stated goal is to help build a better internet. It's a big claim, but the 1.1.1.1 resolver, the free tier, and the civil society programs suggest they mean it.
